If we compare TLBP with SALBP, we can observe the following principal differences. In the SALBP formulation (Baybars, 1986), a workstation is an element of the line to which operations must be assigned and all workstations are assumed to be equally equipped and identical. The operations of the same station are executed sequentially.Of course, recently published ALBPs extend this formulation by considering a number of parameters associated with each workstation in order to configure them individually. These parameters may define the number or the skill level of workers assigned to a workstation (Bukchin and Masin, 2004; Dimitriadis, 2006; Corominas et al., 2008;Miralles et al., 2007), the number and the type of installed facilities (Gadidov and Wilhelm, 2000; Bukchin and Rubinovitz, 2003; Levitin et al., 2006), the organization of parallel (Go ¨kc -en et al., 2006) or two-sided lines (Lee et al., 2001; Lapierre et al., 2006), etc. Nevertheless, these ALBP formulations are different from TLBP, because, for TLBP, assignment of an operation to a machine leads to the use of a (existing or newly created) spindle head able to execute this operation. The operations which are assigned to the same spindle head will be executed in parallel.
