The Influence of Buddhism on Chinese Culture


Abstract: Buddhism, as one of the most influential and important religions in the world, has spread and developed in China for thousands of years. Its influences have extended from religion to every aspect in China. Even in today, it still possesses a certain standing space and could not be replaced by other things. Therefore, in other words, through the study of the influences of Buddhism can we have a better understanding of Buddhism, especially for those who merely have a little proportion of knowledge on Chinese traditional culture.

1.Brief introduction of Buddhism

Buddhism, as a good way of dealing with the growth of individuals’ spirit, is the teaching of citta-dharma and asamskrta-dharma. With its development in China, Buddhism reserves its special and unique values and occupies a crucial position in the profound culture system in ancient China, even shares an equal position with traditional Confucianism and Taoism. Except that, its development in China never stops, but continues to make integration with Chinese traditional thinking. As a result, it is widely accepted and believed by the public in China due to its almighty ability to meet the variable needs of beliefs for Chinese people.

1.1 Introduction of Buddhism

Buddhism is a religion and a philosophy encompassing a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices, largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, commonly known as the Buddha. The Buddha lived and taught in the northeastern Indian subcontinent between the 6th and 4th centuries BC. He is recognized by his adherents as an awakened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end suffering, achieve nirvana, and escape what is seen as a cycle of suffering and rebirth. What he usually did in his whole life is to teach ordinary people how to behave morally and cultivate themselves from a man who is determined to become a Buddha like him to a saint who devotes a lot for human beings. While Buddhism is traditionally conceived as a path of liberation attained through insight into the nature of the mind.
