UNIFIED PLASTIC ANALYSIS FOR INFILLED FRAMES
By T. C. Liauw1 and K. H. Kwan2
ABSTRACT: Based on tests and nonlinear finite element analyses, a unified plastic
analysis for infilled frames with three types of interface conditions is proposed,
in which the stress redistribution towards collapse and the conditions
at the infill-frame interface are taken into account. The theory is applicable to
single and multistory infilled frames, and comparison with experimental results
gives good agreement. Design recommendations for multistory infilled frames
are given.
INTRODUCTION
Investigations of infilled frames made in the sixties (2,12-14,16) were
concerned with the strength and stiffness characteristics of nonintegral
infilled frames, in which weak bond and friction might develop at the
interface between the infills and the frames; no attempt was made to
improve the integrity at the interface. Irregularities and uneveness at the
interface produce considerable variation in structural strength and stiffness
making them unreliable for theoretical prediction and design purposes.
Investigations of integral infilled frames of the seventies (5,6,8,10,15)
provided deeper understanding of the behavior of infilled frames, and
improved structural characteristics have been demonstrated in integral
infilled frames. The problems inherent in a nonintegral infilled frame can
be overcome by the introduction of materials with strong bond (3) or
shear connectors (7,8) at the frame-infill interface, resulting in a more
reliable structure not only for analytical prediction and design purposes,
but also for engineering the structure to give a better performance.
Apart from nonintegral and fully-integral infilled frames, other types
which have been investigated can be grouped as semi-integral infilled
frames, where the panels are partially integrated to the frames, e.g.,
provision of vertical slits in each panel or provision of vertical gaps on
both sides of each panel which is integral with the beams only.
In this paper, a unified plastic analysis of infilled frames is proposed
which accounts for the stress redistribution due to the development of
cracks together with the crushing of the infill towards collapse, and the
shear strength at the infill-frame interface depending upon the interface
conditions. The theory is applicable to single story and multistory single
bay infilled frames, and design recommendations are proposed.
The unified plastic analysis is developed with the backing of rigorous
nonlinear finite element analysis (4,7). Numerous experimental results
conducted by the authors and other researchers were used to verify the
