遂良广泛涉猎文学历史(文史不翻也可,不过老师说能拆的要拆),尤其善于隶书("工"字参考"工于心计"),父亲的朋友欧阳询十分重用他.太宗曾经对魏征说:"虞世南死了之后,没有人可以能够称得上书法好." 魏征说：“褚遂良下笔遒劲有力，很有王逸少书体的笔风。”太宗当天召令他（褚遂良）随侍书写。太宗曾经出皇宫用金银丝帛等求购王羲之的书迹……太宗眼泪鼻涕流满面说：“我不能够。”当日召来长孙无忌、房玄龄、李绩与遂良等人制定策划，立晋王为皇太子。
