首先，根据on the way to school可以看出事情已发生，整个句子应该使用一般过去式，所以see->saw。短语see sb\sth do一般表示看到了事情发展的全过程，see sb\sth doing表示看到了事物正在发生，根据意思来看这里用 rising更合适一些。最后，and连接的两个句子如果主语一致则可以省略后面的主语，但这里句首的主语是I,作者应该是想要表达太阳出来驱散了寒冷，但如果不再加一个the sun或者it 作为第二个句子的主语的话就有歧义表示为我驱散了寒冷。
所以我认为最后的句子应该是 On the way to school ,I saw the sun rising in the east and the sun/it drove away the coldness.
