ARCHITECTURE
DEGREES AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The Liverpool University School of Architecture is the oldest accredited University
delivering Architectural education in the UK.
Architecture at the University of Liverpool, as in the UK generally, is a five year
degree course that is normally taken as 3+2. The description 3+2 refers to the
standard qualification route in the UK. The first part (RIBA Part 1) is a three year BA,
BSc or BEng Bachelor degree in Architecture; it is a BA at Liverpool. Then, normally
after a year in practice, the second part (RIBA Part 2) is a two year course, called the
MArch at Liverpool. This is what is meant by 3+2.
Students at XJTLU take a foundation year so the Bachelor degree is four rather than
three years. After two years there is the possibility to articulate (transfer) to
Liverpool University to the start of year 2 at Liverpool.
As stated, for an XJTLU student the first degree takes four years. This will be a BEng
if taken completely at XJTLU, or a BA if the student articulates to Liverpool for the
final two years.
In China the second stage would be to take a further one year to complete a BArch
at XJTLU. Hence to obtain this qualification the study time is 4+1 (standard in China).
If students want to continue to Masters level, we are looking at a further one year to
get the Liverpool MArch, subject to approval and performance in the BArch.
