从1974年起，联合国环境规划署每年都为世界环境日确立一个主题，并开展相关宣传活动，以提高人们的环保意识。

2007年：“冰川消融，后果堪忧”。中国主题是“污染减排与环境友好型社会”
2006年，沙漠和沙漠化。中国主题是“生态安全与环境友好型社会”

20世纪50年代以来，环境污染问题越来越引起世界各国的普遍重视。1972年6月5日，联合国在瑞典首都斯德哥尔摩举行了首次人类环境会议，通过了著名的《人类环境宣言》及保护全球环境的“行动计划”，规定了人类对全球环境的权利与义务的共同原则。同年10月，第27届联大根据斯德哥尔摩会议的建议，决定成立联合国环境规划署，并正式将6月5日定为“世界环境日（World Environment Day）”。从1974年起，联合国环境规划署每年都根据当年的世界主要环境问题及热点，有针对性地制定世界环境日的主题。

2005年，“营造绿色城市 呵护地球家园”。中国主题是“人人参与，创建绿色家园 ”
