Australians Support Sport and Cultural Activities
Australian’s reputation as sport lovers continues to be supported with the latest sport attendance data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics(ABS).What is perhaps less well known is our interest in things cultural and educational.
We love our sport
The latest official data from the ABS indicates that just less than one in two Australians (44%) aged 15 and over attended at least one sporting event during the 12 months prior to 2005-06.
Australian Rules Football can arguably lay claims to the status of our national sport with more than 2.5 million, or 16% of Australians, going to at least one game. One in three (34%) attended six games or more across the year, suggesting the fan base is strong and committed. The next most popular sports were horse racing (13%). Sports’ efforts to attract the female audience have delivered some way to go to fully engage this important market segment; people aged less than 35 were the strongest supporters of these event sports, with notably almost six in 10 (57%) people aged 18-24 attending at least one event.
Spectators generally go to event infrequently with the “true” fans supporting with regular attendance. The data shows varied considerably:
Almost one in two (46%) going to netball did so six or more times a year.
One in three (34%) going to soccer, basketball, and Australian Rules football did so six times or more in the 12month period.
But the majority of those attending dog racing (74%), harness racing (74%), horse racing (70%), motor sports (69%), and tennis (65%) did so only once or twice.
Australians do have interests beyond sport.
The comparison data on attendance at cultural activities was also released recently and showed that 85% of Australians aged 15 and over attended at least one cultural event in the preceding 12 months. Movies remain the most popular of activities with almost two in three people (65%) going at least once with cinemas being a particular drawing card for 15-17 year olds (93% went to the movies at least once). Other key attractions were more than one in three Australians (36%) attended a zoo or aquarium; with a similar number (34%) visiting the library; and the botanic gardens (34%).
Australians enjoy attending, being part of, and experiencing events. With a comparatively small population (approximately 20 million) the challenge to attract, retain, and increase attendance of the general public is a significant one for both the sports and arts sectors.
