G: How do you spend your spare time, John?
J: Watching TV. I enjoy it very mush.
G: Why? I think it’s a waste of time.
J: I don’t think so. You can get news from it .You can also enjoy sports games and movies at home.
G: Well, that’s true. Do you watch TV every day?
J: Almost every day, especially in the football season.
G: What would you do when you’re on a trip?
J: I listen to the radio for news and music.
G : You look so happy today, Cathy.
C: Yes,my sister is coming from Rome.
G:Really? I’m glad to hear that. What’s her name? She’s on holiday, right?
C:Her name’s Susan. She’s coming here on business. I’ll introduce her to you when she arrives.
G: Thank you. It’ll be very nice to meet her. Does she look like you?
C: Not exactly. She’s taller and prettier.
G: Where does she work,then?
C: She works in a garment company.
G: Oh,she must be a model.
C: No. Her figure is just as good as a model, but she is a fashion designer.
G: Why? What a pity!
C: It’s wonderful to be a model, but she thinks it more interesting to make piople beautiful.
G: I see. Please let me know when she arrives.
Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was borm in 1809. He was President of the United States from1861 until he died in 1865.
Lincoln was a very tall man.He was six feet four inches tall. His feet were big. They were twelve inches long.
Lincoln was too tall to fit in most beds. When he was President, the people from his hometown gave hin a special bed..It was nine feet long, and so it was big enough for him.
All his life, Lincoln liked to laugh. He liked to make other people laugh, too.People said that he was so funny that he could even make cats laugh.
Many people thought Abraham Lincoln was very ugly. Right before he became President, an eleven-year-old girl wrote him a letter. She said that she wanted him to grow a beard. Lincoln thought about this and decided that it was a good idea. That’s why in most pictures of Lincoln he has a short beard.
Uncle’s Birthday Present
Mary was a university student. She did not have much money, and he parents were not rich, but she had a rich uncle. He had no children, and Mary was his favourite niece, so he always gave her expensive presents at Christmas and on her birthdays.
When he Uncle George’s birthday came round, Mary wanted to buy him something really special. However, as he was so wealthy, she did not know what to buy. She went into the best shop in her town and explained what her problem was to one of the helpful young shop assistants.
Finally Mary said to her, ‘I suppose his isn’t the first time anybody has come to you with this problem. What do you have for someone who’s already got everything he wants or needs?’
The shop assistant sighed deeply and answered,’Envy. Only envy.’
