有个小姑娘离家到树林去玩，在森林里迷了路，闯到林中的一座小房子里。这个房子里住着三只熊。熊爸爸、熊妈妈和熊宝宝。现在三只熊都不在家。
小房子里有两个房间，一间是饭厅，一间是卧室。小姑娘走进饭厅，看见桌子上有三碗粥。小姑娘拿起最大的汤匙，尝尝那只大碗里的粥；又尝尝中碗里的粥；然后又尝尝小蓝碗里的粥。她觉得熊宝宝的粥味道最好。
小姑娘想坐下来歇歇，看见桌子旁边有三把椅子小姑娘爬上大椅子，摔了下来；她坐到中椅上，觉得不舒服；最后，她坐上小椅子，乐得笑起来了。这把椅子多么舒服呀！然后她就坐在椅子上，舒舒服服地摇呀摇，愈摇愈猛。
小椅子给摇垮了，小姑娘摔倒在地板上。她爬起身来，走进第二间房间。房间里有三张床：第一张是大床，第二张是中床，第三张是小床。小姑娘躺到大床上，觉得太大；躺到中床上，又觉得太高；躺到小床上恰恰正好，小姑娘呼呼地睡着了。
三只熊回到家里，已经饿了，正想吃中饭，却发现碗里的东西都被别人吃过了。
之后三只小熊看到了自己的椅子，发现椅子也被人动过了。
三只熊走进第二间房子，发现自己的床也被睡过了，而且小熊发现了小姑娘就睡在它床上，便尖叫起来：“就是她！抓住她！”小熊正要咬她。小姑娘睁开眼，看见三只熊，连忙扑到窗口。窗子本来是开着的，她从窗口跳出来，飞也似的逃跑了。熊没能追上她。
