1.表示能力
can表示现在的能力，即“能够，会”，could表示过去的能力。
Can you play the piano?(表示现在的能力)你会弹钢琴吗?
Mary could sing the English song when she was four.
(表示过去的能力)玛丽4岁时就会唱这首英文歌。
2.表示允许
can表示允许，意为“可以”。
You can take the seat，if you want. 如果想坐这个座位，你就坐吧。
We can't wear jeans at work. 我们工作时不可以穿牛仔裤。
3.请求允许
“Can/Could I... ?”是请求对方允许的句型，意为“我可以(做)……吗?”，could比can在语气上更加委婉。肯定回答常用“Sure./Of course./Certainly.”等，否定回答常用“Sorry，you can't. ”。
—Can/Could I put my bag here?我可以把包放在这儿吗?
—Certainly. /Sorry，you can’t. 当然可以。/对不起，你不可以。
注意 表示许可时不能用could，只能用can。
4.请求帮助
“Can/Could you... ?”是请求对方给予帮助的句型，意为“你能(做)……吗?”，could比can在语气上更加委婉。
—Could you please open the door for me?请为我打开门好吗?
