写作背景
保罗写了前书给哥林多教会後，该地信徒的属灵情况未见好转，反有恶化的倾向，於是他亲往该处试图解决教会中的间题，但结果不能达到前往的目的，甚至双方闹得很不愉快 （见林後2:1）。 离开後，他在忧愁痛苦中（参2:3; 7:8）写了一封严厉责备教会的信，由提多带往哥林多。其间，保罗心里十分焦虑，盼望那封信能使教会回转。终於提多带回信徒悔改的喜信，於是保罗为之释然和欢喜 （参7章）， 遂在马其顿写下本书（约为主後五十五至五十六年间），解释他改变行程的因由，劝勉教会接纳悔改者，解释自己事奉的身分和性质，并教导教会如何收集捐款赈济耶路撒冷信徒。
主题特色
本书较突出的主题有几方面：
　1　受苦的含意、
　2　捐献应有的态度、
　3　作神仆的工作性质和权柄。
比起保罗其他书信，较著重作者个人与信徒的关系，而少系统化的教导，内容较缺乏条理；但保罗的性情、责任感、感受则表露无遗。
书中2:14-7:3这一段 ， 有学者认为与上下文的连贯性较弱，可能出自保罗另一封致哥林多教会的信，但是，把此段看为保罗的离题发挥，更为合理可信。
另外，10-13章语调严厉 ， 与前面和蔼语调不同，有学者认为这四章可能出自2:3和7:8所提到的「忧伤之信」。 不过，於1:13, 17; 5:12起; 6:12 起等段，字里行间都显示教会中仍有信徒对保罗不满和怀有敌意，所以保罗结束本书前再提出严重的警告。也可能保罗担心教会因情况好转而自高自满，於是改变语调向教会提出警告。
