Now 38, Bernstein and Schein were twins. They were adopted by different families 36 years ago. Though they grew up only miles from each other in New York City, neither girl knew that she had a twin sister.
During their growing years, both girls had the same experiences: "We were each monitor of our high school, and
went on to study art," says Bernstein. Both young women spent time in Paris, and later worked as artists: Bernstein as a
writer, and Schein as a singer.
All their lives, both women sometimes felt kind of sorry.Schein often told friends, "I feel like I've lost a twin,"when she was feeling very unhappy. But neither one knew the true story until 2010, when Schein decided to look for her birth parents. Though she didn't find her birth parents, she discovered her twin sister.
The two sisters finally met in a restaurant in New York City. What might happen to them?Would they look the same? Act the same? After all these years spent as strangers, how could they get on with each other as sisters?
Now both women are writers, so they want to write about their experience as it was happening. Their writings would become the new book, A Story of Twins Separated and Reunited.
