红腹松鼠主要是栖居在密林中，生活习性与灰鼠有些相似，多喜晨、昏活动，食性主要以摄食各种坚果，如松果、栗及浆果为主，亦食各种树叶、嫩枝、花芽及鸟卵、雏鸟和昆虫等。每年可繁殖2次，每次产3-4仔，以2仔居多。
