《绿野仙踪》改编自童话小说，因此影片采用了比较简单的叙述结构，以遵照平衡，打破平衡然后重建平衡的线性结构为主体。影片最初的平衡建立在小女孩桃乐茜与叔叔婶婶生活的堪萨斯城，而后突然袭击的龙卷风打破这种平衡，最后以桃乐茜重返家园而重建平衡。
除了采取这种简单的模式以外，影片人物的设计与分配也遵从了原著的模式，虽然简单地将人物设计为正反两方，却不单调。
