Growing good corn 是一本书
作者:Robin Morgan
在现实生活中,每个人都不是一座孤岛—我们每个人总是处于一定的社会关系中。如果每个人都在付出,每个人都尽其所长,而每个人又都能受益,都能得其所需,得其所乐,那么生活该多么美好。
James Bender, in his book HowtoTalkWellrelates the story of a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blueribbon(最高的荣誉). One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it.
The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they also enter the competition each year?"the reporter asked.
"Why didn’t you know, sir?"said the farmer. "The wind picks up pollen(花粉)from the ripening(成熟的)corn and carries it from field to field. If my neighbors grow bad corn, cross-pollination(异花授粉)will steadily lower the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn."
He is very much aware of the connection of life. His corn can’t improve unless his neighbor’s corn also improves.
So it is in other aspects. Those who choose to be at peace must help their neighbors to be at peace. Those who choose to live well must help others live well, for the value of life is measured by the lives it touches. And those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.
The lesson for each of us is this: if we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.
